Race Reports – Hell of the South & Cedar Hill Criterium

By Jess Christensen

Hell of the South 3/29/14: Team WE packed up the Subaru and showed up bright and early for the 7:30am start time at the race, presented by SVMIC Cycling. Despite the rain and cold, Jess and Emma still raced the 29 miles alongside 15 other strong women. There was a faint drizzle throughout the entire race, making the potholes, gravel and bridges a bit more of a challenge. The group thinned out after the ever so popular gravel portion of the course, leaving 10 ladies in the group. Intermittent attacks occurred throughout the rolling course, but no one could get away. Approaching the finishing stretch in a double pace line, with one mile to go Emma was leading Jess out for the sprint finish. Much to our surprise, two attacks, one on either side, happened simultaneously with 200 meters to go. Jess quickly jumped on one in an all out sprint to the finish. Video review resulted in a 2nd place for Jess, coming 6 inches short of first. Emma had an amazing race, placing top 10 in her first race of the year since having a baby last November!

Cedar Hill Criterium 3/30/14 (Women Cat 4): Nerves surmounted pre-race for Team WE on this beautiful, sunny day at Cedar Hill Park. Jena raced in the Cat 4 race along with 19 other women, one of the largest Cat 4 fields we have seen in the area. Warm up for this 30 minute race was key, as the pace quickly picked up. An attack with 4 laps to go, left Jena and the pack of girls chasing. Unable to close the gap, the finishing sprint left the girls sprinting for 2nd place. Jena finished 7th place in her first race of the year, gaining much experience and insight of what will come this year from the Cat 4 women.

Cedar Hill Criterium 3/30/14 (Women Cat Pro/1/2/3): Team WE was a presence on the line in the field of 23 women in the Pro/1/2/3 race. Jess, Emma and Rachel did not know much of what to expect from the field being the first race of the season and many teams traveling from out of town. Three $100 primes spiced things up early in the race, where Jess sprinted to win one! With 4 laps to go, the pace started picking up when Rachel and Emma flew to the front of the pack. Team WE was leading coming into the first corner when other teams started attacking. Approaching the last stretch of the course on the last lap, things started to shake up. Riders squeezed into small areas of the peloton, making the race a bit dangerous. At the last hill, attacks happened on the left and right, creating a massive sprint finish. Jess was squeezed in the middle of riders, while Emma and Rachel were stuck behind. Team WE finished together 10th, 11th, and 12th. It was a great day, and despite the finish, we had a fun, safe race.
